6 Steps to Instantly Become Top Leader (Simon Sinek / Netflix)

Updated: 5 days ago

Whether you’ve just stepped into your first leadership role or are striving to become a more impactful leader to achieve a truly extraordinary desired state, these steps will introduce fresh perspectives or renew your understanding of leadership. One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was not understanding the difference between being a manager and being a leader. I didn’t realize that true leadership goes beyond simply creating a happy working environment with snacks and salary raises. Leadership is about focusing on the deeper purpose that drives your team, empowering them to create lasting impact.

I’ve meticulously crafted this framework not just for myself, but also for my family, teams, and clients to make a real difference in the world—moving beyond the mere pursuit of fame and money to creating lasting, meaningful impact.

Framework / 架構

  • Step # 1: Find Your Why /

    • Understand your core purpose. Knowing your "Why" is the foundation of effective leadership, driving every decision and action you take.

  • Step # 2: Shift from Manager to True Leader /

    • Transition from simply managing tasks to inspiring and leading people. True leaders empower their teams and focus on long-term growth rather than short-term gains.

Step # 3: Set a Desired State and Vision /

    • Clearly define the future you want to create. Setting a clear vision aligns your team and guides your collective efforts toward a common goal.

  • Step # 4: Go Out of Your Way to Invite and Attract A+ Talent, and Walk Away from C Players / 竭盡全力邀請並吸引A+人才,並遠離C級人才

    • Focus on building a team of top performers. Attracting A+ talent elevates the entire organization, while distancing from C players ensures high standards.

  • Step # 5: Create a Safe and Thriving Environment with "No Rules" /

    • Foster a culture where innovation and creativity can flourish. A "No Rules" environment encourages autonomy and trust, leading to a thriving workplace.

  • Step # 6: Create Progress with Momentum /

    • Build and maintain momentum to keep your team moving forward. Progress is achieved by consistently driving action and celebrating small wins along the way.

Step 1: Find Your Why & Exercise /

What makes you do what you do and wake up 5am?

Who is Simon?

  • Simon Sinek has inspired countless leaders and individuals to become better leaders by first discovering their WHY. His approach emphasizes that understanding your core purpose is the key to effective leadership and enduring success.

  • Simon Sinek

What is the "WHY" framework and concept?

  • The concept of WHY/HOW/WHAT is central to Simon Sinek’s groundbreaking TED talk, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Action, delivered on September 29, 2009 (https://youtu.be/u4ZoJKF_VuA?si=3ZsVuqPVpLWSP96l), which introduces the idea of the Golden Circle. As of August 2025, this talk has garnered over 11 million views. Simon emphasizes that consumers or followers don't merely buy or support what you do, but rather why you do it and how you do it differently.

A true example of WHY matters?

  • A powerful example Simon frequently cites is a conversation with Apple executives. Apple understands that while Microsoft may have the latest and potentially superior device at any given moment, Apple is committed to its WHY, playing what Simon describes as an "infinite game"—a game focused on long-term vision and values rather than short-term wins.

How to find your WHY? (Please watch the video above)

  • Approach

    • In the first step of discovering your WHY, Simon recommends doing a "Friend Zone" exercise.

  • Steps

    • Step A:

      • This involves reaching out to close friends and asking them multiple times why they think you are friends. The goal is to uncover recurring themes that reveal your true motivations and the qualities that naturally draw people to you.

    • Step B:

      • By the end of these conversations, you will likely identify key aspects of your personality that drive others to connect with you—insights that may surprise you but are crucial in understanding your WHY. These insights can then guide you in leading with purpose and authenticity.

Step 2: Shift from Manager to True Leader /

you are not in charge, but you need to sacrifice by taking all responsibility and not the credit by caring for the people in charge. Great leader are not responsible for the job, but the people who are responsible for the job such as customer service, sales.

A. The Big Idea: We all need to be leaders and not manager

  • Definition

    • Leadership is not defined by a job title; it’s about empowering those around us to grow by doing everything in our power to help our team and clients achieve their dreams, prioritizing their success over personal gain. True leadership begins with the principles of Servant Leadership.

  • How to acquire such skill

    • Leadership is a lifelong journey of continuous learning, where we must always be students of the craft. Courage is a defining characteristic of a great leader—the courage to rise above short-term challenges, the courage to believe in a greater vision, the courage to speak truth to power, and the courage to stand up for others when it matters most.

B. What To Do: Focus in solving problem for our team by asking only "how can I help".

C. What Not To Do: Not manipulating for personal gain
